What is Calendula?
Calendula is a flowering plant, also known as English Garden Marigold, Fleur de Calendule. Calendula is not to be confused with ornamental marigolds—the type that commonly grow in flower and vegetable gardens. Calendula is native to the Mediterranean region, Asia and Southern Europe.
There are somewhere between 15-20 species of the Calendula flowering plant, but the variety that is most commonly used in herbal and skin care products is the Calendula officinalis.
Calendula is used in foods particularly to impart color and in a variety of oral and topical products for medicinal and healing purposes.
What are the benefits of the Calendula Flower?
Calendula flower is the flowering portion of the plant, which contains flavonoids and linoleic acid, both highly effective ingredients that aid in reducing pain and inflammation. It is also found to be beneficial in speeding up wound healing by helping new healthy tissue to grow and by decreasing the swelling at the site of the wound. Calendula oil is extracted from the flower petals and infused in many types of creams, lotions, oils and oral supplements.
Its flower is used for various medicinal purposes, most notably as a natural muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory.
While there are no significant side effects or dangers reported in the use of Calendula, some people who have particular plant and flower allergies have had reactions. It is best to avoid use when pregnant or breastfeeding—simply because there is not enough information at this time to ensure its safety.
